I had suffered the biggest blow. I was always super close to my grandparents, who I called, “Honey and Poppy.” Their health had been declining, but I was blindsided when Poppy passed in the hospital and even more stunned when Honey passed in her bed at home, exactly three months later.  Finding comfort wasn’t even on my radar.

If you’ve lost someone, a family member, friend, or pet, you know the heartache I was feeling. I could no longer call them up and chat, or visit their well-kept ranch-style home on the golf course. I was broken. Absolutely broken.

Despite how sure I was that I’d be forever weeping at their loss, I sit here today at peace. It’s truly a peace I cannot understand. It’s been 7 months since Poppy passed, and 4 since Honey, yet I type this with a sense of peace that I cannot describe.

During my months of healing, I found so much comfort in certain words- words I’m going to share with you so you have them in your time of sadness or struggle, in times where you need comfort and uplifting. And so you can share them with others who need them too.

Now hang in there with me, because what I’m going to say next might be different than what you were expecting. Maybe you’ll feel surprised as you read because you’ll see that these words I speak of that comforted me beyond belief came from the Bible. You may be shocked to hear that the Bible isn’t a huge, boring rule book, but that it’s encouraging and comforting. My hope is that the words I share from the Bible here will encourage you to open yours and discover the ultimate comfort that its uplifting words bring.

The Bible is Relevant and Comforting

I’ll be the first one to admit that I don’t always understand what I read the first time and that parts of the Bible seem dense and hard to get through. BUT that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time. (Click here for a back to basics guide if you’re brand new to Christianity.)

I’ve heard people say the Bible is so old, it can’t possibly be relevant, and it’s outdated. Old doesn’t equal irrelevant (you’re welcome to my older readers) and outdated is subjective. Of course they didn’t have iPhones in Bible times, but there’s nothing new under the sun, and all the struggle and turmoil in the world today is parallel to what’s in the Bible.

I also want to note that the Bible may come off as a rule book to some because the Old Testament is more rule and law-heavy. But good news friend! It’s not the Old Testament anymore, woohoo! When Jesus came, as you can see in the New Testament, everything changed.

So if you’re a new Bible reader, start with the New Testament. Even though the entire Bible has an overarching storyline, the New Testament offers easier reading, and a super clear “scarlet cord” running through it (gospel story).

All of that said to express that there is sooo much comfort in the Word of God, despite people brushing it off for whatever reason they choose. There are hidden gems everywhere, verses that will inspire and comfort you, accounts of struggles turned around, and uplifting words for even your darkest days.

Buuuut, you’ll never uncover all those gems if you don’t dust off that ol’ book and crack ‘er open!

Oh, and don’t let this big book intimidate you! It’s really not scary at all. And to get you started, I’m listing out some of my favorite, go-to verses for finding comfort!

Let’s get to it!

Here’s What Happens Next

  1. Pick one of these verses that stands out the most to you, the one that makes you feel something, the one that jumps out to you!  (Yay, now you have a fave verse for finding comfort!  Mine is Isaiah 54:10.)
  2. Do something with those special words!  Here are some suggestions: write them on a sticky note and stick the note to your mirror or desk, repeat the verse in your head like a mantra, commit the words you picked to memory so you always have them on hand to assist you in finding comfort, or dare I suggest sharing the verse with someone who needs to hear it (in a loving way of course).
  3.  Allow yourself to feel the comfort the verse provides.  Rest in that comfort.

Finding comfort doesn’t have to be tricky or elusive. Give it a shot, crack open that bible, or get the app on your phone, and go in with an open mind that the Bible is not just some boring rule book but that it’s a love letter written to encourage and guide us. I know finding comfort won’t be hard for you now!
